Black History Month

February 4, 2013

"Over a Way that with Tears Has Been Watered"
Morning Worship | Sunday, February 17 at 11:15 AM

Join us for a special Black History Month celebration, as we reflect on the similarities of the struggles for freedom in the Hebrew Scriptures and the African American experience. Rabbi Dr. Rachel Sabath Beit-Halachmi joins us from Jerusalem to help lead worship.

Film Screening and Discussion: Woke Up Black
Sunday, February 17 at 1:00 PM | Suggested Donation $10

Woke Up Black focuses on five black youth, along with their struggles and triumphs as they start their journey into adulthood. The film places at its center the voices of black youth–their ideas, attitudes, and opinions that are often overlooked in society at large. Includes a post-screening discussion with filmmaker Mary F. Morten and our teens, Christopher St. Rose and Aaliyah Bell, moderated by Jacqui Lewis.

"Re-storying Race: A Journey toward Honesty"
Adult Education | Sundays at 1:00 PM

Each week the group will explore the construct of race and racism in light of the theological concept of the reign of God. As people of faith, what are we called to realize and change about race and racism within ourselves, within this community, and in the world? This will be a safe space where we can get honest about our own stories regarding race, and where we will work together to write a new story. We will be using the documentary series Race: The Power of an Illusion to help us in our exploration, as well as centering moments, small group discussion, Bible study, and a screening of the film Woke Up Black on February 17. The four-part series will be led by Jacqui Lewis, Barbara Rice, and Anurag Gupta.
