Hurricane Sandy Relief Work

November 8, 2012

We have heard from many of you that you would like to be a part of a hands-on service opportunity in response to Hurricane Sandy.

This Saturday, November 10, we are organizing a group of volunteers to travel together to the Rockaways. We will leave in vans at 8:30 am from Middle Church. We are planning to return to Middle before dark. There has been heavy traffic jams when volunteers depart the area, so we can't anticipate the exact time of our return. But we expect no later than 7:30 pm.

We will be partnering with Rockaway Emergency Plan, a grassroots organization there. We will receive our tasks on Saturday upon our arrival in the Rockaways. Some examples of "jobs" people have done this week include gutting houses, organizing donations, bringing supplies to other sites and shut-ins. Since we won't know our assignments until we arrive, we will need to be flexible and patient about our assignments and the process of receiving them.

Please dress warmly, as you will either be outside for most of the day in cold temperatures, or in houses that may not have heat. Plan to wear clothes that can get dirty, and old sneakers/work boots that can also get dirty.

The Rockaways are in need of additional cleaning supplies. Please bring, as you are able, one or more of the following to donate to the on-going clean-up: work gloves, brooms, shovels, reinforced masks (preferably with respirators), hand warmers, mops, and flashlights. Other needs include: battery operated carbon monoxide detectors or smoke alarms.

Please bring a bagged lunch for yourself. There is already food available for residents.

You must RSVP to Alisa Joyce, by Friday, November 9 at 10 am if you want to participate. Please also let us know if you can drive. RSVPs are mandatory in order for us to secure transport. Tricia Sheffield and Christina Fleming will be staffing this.

We thank you for all you are doing to help our region recover.
