Lent at Middle Church

February 7, 2013

Lent is a time of preparation beginning with Ash Wednesday and ending on Maundy Thursday. The season lasts for about 40 days and commemorates the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert before beginning his public ministry.

Many Christians practice prayer, repentance, fasting, and alms-giving during the Lenten season. All these ancient practices have the power to propel us further and deeper in our relationship with God if we let them. Lent can test our minds, bodies, and spirits if we are open and willing to endure that journey – I hope you will journey with your family of faith to unexpected places this Lenten season.

Below are some of our offerings as we begin the Lenten Season.

Sunday Worship Celebrations throughout Lent
11:15 AM and 6:00 PM

The Blessing of a Skinned Knee - welcomes parents for four Friday evenings
In a culture whose values are often at odds with the ones parents wish to uphold and instill, The Blessing of a Skinned Knee points the way to raising self–reliant, compassionate and ethical children. Childcare provided but must RSVP to ajoyce@middlechurch.org by February 21st. Fridays beginning March 1st from 7-8:15 PM.

The Forgiveness Project - welcomes teens and adults for four Sunday afternoons
How should forgiveness be practiced? Some urge forgiveness as a Christian duty. Others argue that certain conditions must be met. How do we sort through competing claims? And how do we get past some of our emotional barriers to real forgiveness? These are the kinds of the questions we will explore together in this study of a theme particular to the season of Lent, but fit for any season of our lives. Sundays beginning February 24th from 2:30-3:30 PM.

The Artist’s Way – welcomes teens and adults for four Sunday afternoons
This condensed version of the popular workshop offers techniques and exercises to assist people in gaining self-confidence in harnessing their creative talents and skills. In addition, the experience highlights a connection between artistic creativity and spiritual connection with God. Sundays beginning February 24th from 3-4 PM.
