Middle Organizes with #CloseRikers Campaign – Here's How You Can Help

November 11, 2016

As clergy and people of faith and conscience, we back New York Governor Cuomo and NYC City Council President Melissa Mark-Viverito calling on you to close Rikers Island Jail. Here's how you can get involved:

1. Watch Bill Moyers' new doc, RIKERS, which premieres Tuesday November 15 at 10pm EST on Thirteen. The film features testimonials about the culture of systemic violence and corruption that has plagued the notorious NYC jail for decades. It will also stream for free at Rikersfilm.org on the night of broadcast and after.

"RIKERS, a film from acclaimed journalist Bill Moyers, is the first documentary to focus exclusively on people formerly detained in New York City's notorious Rikers Island Jail and give them the opportunity to tell their compelling stories, direct to camera."

2. Sign this petition to #CloseRikers. Concerned citizens, people of faith, and clergy will deliver this petition to Mayor Bill de Blasio’s home at a prayer vigil surrounding Gracie Mansion on Sunday, December 4 at 3:30 pm.

On Sunday, November 13 at 2 pm, Middle Church held a special screening of Bill Moyers' doc, RIKERS.
