SIT DOWN AT THE MERCY SEAT

Lyrics: Bil Wright
Music: Dionne McClain-Freeney

1.God bless the black child
Walking the city street
In a land where gunmen prowl
Fear and hatred meet
A loved one hears him asking,
Man why you chasing me?
Man says, “Look in the mirror, boy
Tell me what you see.”

We’ve been down this road before, God
And it doesn’t seem to change
Heal the deaf ears
Cure the insanity
If it’s not clear then make it plain
Babies are not for killing
Whether black or white or brown
We’ve been on this earth for centuries
And still killing’s going round.
Jesus, Rabbi, or Buddha
I’m sure they’d all agree
Put down your gun, open up your heart
Sit down at the Mercy Seat!

2. God Bless the young child
Learning the greatest truth
We will live in peace or die
Do we need more proof?
A young child asks her father,
Dad, why are you hating them?
Dad says, “Too late to change things now”
Child says,
“Watch me! I’ll begin!”

We’ve been down this road before, God
And it doesn’t seem to change
Heal the deaf ears
Cure the insanity
If it’s not clear then make it plain
Babies are not for killing
Whether black or white or brown
We’ve been on this earth for centuries
And still killing’s going round.
Jesus, Rabbi, or Buddha
I’m sure they’d all agree
Put down your gun, open up your heart
Put down your hate, open up your heart
Put down your fear, open up your heart
Sit down, sit down
Sit down at the mercy seat!
