Daughters of Eve Film Screening & Panel Conversation

Our For the Love of Black Stories series continues! To kick off Women’s History Month, we’re hosting a screening of the fabulous new, award-winning film Daughters of Eve. After we finish watching the movie together, we’ll be joined by director/producer Zanah Thirus and one of the featured actors, Rev. Estee Nina Dillard, who will join Middle ministers Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis, Rev. Amanda Hambrick Ashcraft and Rev. Natalie Renee Perkins for a panel conversation, and audience Q&A.

Daughter of Eve is a mixed media documentary film that analyzes and aims to dismantle misogyny and gender hierarchy within the Christian faith.

Named one of Diversity in Cannes’ Top 10 Filmmakers of the Decade, Zanah Thirus is a filmmaker (producer+ director+ writer) from Chicago, IL.

 Since launching her brand, Zanah Thirus Productions, Zanah has shifted her focus to merging arts and activism through documentary and narrative storytelling. Her films explore subjects such as gender inequity, local politics, intersectional feminism, and recovering from sexual trauma.

In 2020, Zanah’s documentary, Unlearning Sex, won Best Human Rights Film at the Toronto International Women’s Film Festival and The Silver Award at the Spotlight Documentary Film Awards. Her documentary, Black Feminist, won Best Documentary at Coal City Film Festival (2021) in Nigeria, and the Jury Award for Best U.S. Documentary at the International Black & Diversity Film Festival (2021). This year, Zanah branched into comedic storytelling with her romantic comedy short, The Love You Want Exists, which premiered at Academy Award Qualifying Festival, Bronze Lens (2021).

Estee Nena Dillard, is a scholar, sexual health educator and minister focusing on the intersections of theology, sexology and health. Estee is committed to discovering the ways that theological formation, spiritual care and ritual heal and transform the wellness of African American people. As a black feminist/womanist practitioner, her foci are embodiment, expanding the spiritual discourse on erotic power, and spiritual formation. Estee is a graduate of Spelman College and Candler School of Theology at Emory University who currently serves as a Children’s Pastor in Atlanta, GA. She is one of the featured presenters in Daughters of Eve.

 Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis uses her gifts as author, activist, preacher, public theologian toward creating an antiracist, just, fully welcoming society in which everyone has enough. Dr. Lewis has been on the The Today Show, All In with Chris Hayes, AM Joy, The Melissa Harris Perry Show, NY1, ABC, NBC, PBS, CBS and WPIX, where she recently covered the Brooklyn memorial for George Floyd. Dr. Lewis created two national television programs: Just Faith, an on-demand television program on MSNBC.com, and Chapter and Verse at PBS. The author of many books, her most recent is Fierce Love: A Bold Path to a Ferocious Courage and Rule-Breaking Kindness That Can Heal the World, available wherever books are sold.

Rev. Amanda Hambrick Ashcraft is the Executive Minister for Justice, Education & Movement Building at Middle Church. Prior to Middle, she served as Director of Outreach at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian in Midtown Manhattan, and as Outreach Coordinator for Metro Baptist Church/the Rauschenbusch Center in Hell’s Kitchen, NY. She is the founder of Raising Imagination, a platform that examines social issues through the lens of imagination and encourages activism with young and old alike.

Rev. Natalie Renee Perkins serves as Digital Minister and Director of Digital Ministry at Middle Collegiate Church, helping to build and hold its online church and community. She received her Masters of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in 2015 and was awarded the Karen Ziegler Feminist Preaching Prize. She became an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ denomination in 2020. Additionally, Natalie is a professional writer, musical theatre performer, and composer. Her album, Songs of Your Truth is available on any major music streaming and/or purchasing platform.
