Pray to Rise: Ash Wednesday

Join Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis for to receive ashes and communion. Since we’re online, well be creating a special liturgy where you receive a personal blessing from Jacqui, with the traditional words of imposition, but you’ll actually apply the ashes to your own forehead. This means you’ll need ashes! Traditionally, ashes are made by burning the palm fronds from the previous year’s Palm Sunday. Likely, we assume you don’t have your own year-old palm fronds handy. Don’t worry! If you care about the ashes being traditional, you can order ashes online. Or, if you prefer to make your own, here’s a handy recipe:

1. Take unbleached paper (you’re wearing them so you want to make sure it’s not toxic!) and burn several sheets into ash.
2. Combine those ashes with a small amount of olive oil.

That’s all there is to it, and you’ll be ready to receive your ashes! Or, if you prefer, you’re more than welcome to simply join and receive a blessing. Remember to bring your communion elements if you like, as well, as there will be an opportunity to celebrate the sacrament together.
