Telling Truths Workshop: An Anti-Racist Practice

June 14, 2022 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

How to Tell New Stories About Race

This four-part Zoom writing and discussion workshop begins with the idea that we don’t just create stories, stories create us. When enough of us believe certain stories, those stories become the topsoil in which our selves, families, and societies and cultures take root and grow. Stories help construct our realities. Stories tell us who we are, and they make us who we are.

We who are committed to antiracist practice know that some stories–“the American Dream” is just one example–act as pillars holding up white supremacy. Part of the work of rising from the ashes of the old, to creating the Beloved Community, is to discover, inscribe, and share new, more authentic stories about who we really are as people shaped by race and stories about race.

Online sessions are from 6:30-8 p.m. ET June 14, June 28, July 12, and July 26.

The workshop will be facilitated by Jocelyn Lieu.

Jocelyn Lieu is the author of a 9/11 memoir titled What Isn’t There: Inside a Season of Change and a collection of stories, Potential Weapons. She received her MFA from Warren Wilson College and a BA, in English, from Yale College. Currently, she teaches fiction in the New York University Creative Writing Program. Jocelyn began going to Middle Collegiate Church in 2000, shortly after her daughter, Grace, was born. A member of the Great Consistory, she currently serves on Middle’s Reparations Task Force. Jocelyn lives in downtown Manhattan, in the Munsee Lenape homeland, with her husband, novelist Chuck Wachtel.
