SUMMARY:Middle Book Read: This Thing of Ours
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US HERE \nIf are having trouble getting in\, you may need to create an account. You can do so here. \nSummertime is the perfect time for a fun fiction book!\nAbout Frederick Joseph’s This Thing of Ours: \nThe powerful and timely YA novel debut from two-time New York Times best-selling author Frederick Joseph is a deeply heartfelt story—and a rallying cry against book banning. \nIn an instant\, Ossie Brown’s entire future is in jeopardy when a torn ACL ends his promising basketball career. Now that basketball is no longer a major part of his identity\, Ossie—a Black teen who doesn’t come from wealth and privilege—must navigate his new place in the social and academic ecosystems of his affluent\, predominantly white school. When a Black teacher encourages him to join her highly regarded writing program\, Ossie begins to find a new purpose\, buoyed by not only the rich works of literature by marginalized authors he’s now reading\, but also by new friends who see him as something more than an asset to the sports program. Everything changes when some students’ viral “anti-woke” video puts the teacher’s job\, the writing program\, and even Ossie’s friends’ safety at risk—and Ossie must find his true voice. This unflinching novel confronts critical issues like racism and classism\, the treatment of student athletes\, homophobia\, and book banning while weaving together a moving testament to family\, romance\, friendship\, and the power of words.\n(https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/786795/this-thing-of-ours-by-frederick-joseph/#)

SUMMARY:Middle Solidarity Fast for Gaza
DESCRIPTION:SIGN UP HERE \nFrom Monday\, August 4th\, through Monday\, August 11th\, we will be joining the global solidarity movement that is participating in the Fast for Gaza. \nWe will fast in solidarity with the people of Gaza who are being starved\, as blockades continue to limit access to food\, water\, and formula. \nWe will fast to bring attention to the ongoing crisis and to demand action from our elected officials. \nWe will fast to demonstrate that we are all the children of G-D and our liberation is interconnected. \nWe will fast because the moment demands it. \nSIGN UP HERE \nThere are several ways you can participate: by joining a group fast on Monday\, August 4th; signing up to fast for a 24-hour period as part of the chain fast; or donating the amount you would spend on food for one day to an organization that works to alleviate hunger—either in your local community or around the globe. \n(We understand that fasting and/or monetary donations are not possible for everyone. Please let us know if there are other ways you’d like to participate this week. Alternate options include attending a local rally or action\, setting aside intentional time for prayer\, sending encouragement to fasters\, or volunteering with a local community organization.) \nTo learn more about the Fast for Gaza\, please visit Fast for Gaza and Veterans for Peace. \nYou will receive a confirmation email by Sunday\, August 4th. \nSIGN UP HERE

SUMMARY:Voter Reform Group
DESCRIPTION:A strong democracy depends on civic engagement and a commitment to pluralism. We come together every other week to learn\, discuss\, and share our individual perspectives on elections and political issues affecting our communities and nation. Importantly\, we use this group to take action. We register new voters and mobilize voters for every election. We encourage members to become poll workers and monitors\, and to take action on voting rights and other justice issues. We engage in nonpartisan postcard writing campaigns to encourage people to vote and remove any financial barrier so that all citizens can equally participate. Together\, we send thousands of cards and letters and amplify our impact. Join us bi-weekly on Sundays at 10am-11am to mobilize. \nClick here to RSVP and receive Zoom information for our next meeting. \nTo join the team\, contact votingproject@middlechurch.org.

SUMMARY:Middle Book Read: This Thing of Ours
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US HERE \nIf are having trouble getting in\, you may need to create an account. You can do so here. \nSummertime is the perfect time for a fun fiction book!\nAbout Frederick Joseph’s This Thing of Ours: \n  \nThe powerful and timely YA novel debut from two-time New York Times best-selling author Frederick Joseph is a deeply heartfelt story—and a rallying cry against book banning.

SUMMARY:Village Chorus for Children & Youth
DESCRIPTION:The Village Chorus for Children and Youth at Middle Church is a program that educates children about the significance of community engagement in promoting racial\, LGBTQIA+\, and economic equality through music. Participants learn a diverse repertoire\, including pieces from Beethoven\, the Beatles\, and Broadway\, which helps them build confidence and receive support from the congregation. The chorus performs monthly during worship services and has showcased their talents at venues like Joe’s Pub at The Public\, The Lower Eastside Girls Club\, and the New York Public Library. \nRehearsals are conducted via in-person on Sundays from 1:00 to 2:15 pm. \nWhile there is no cost to join\, children should have a passion for music\, a strong desire to learn\, and the ability to read. \nFor more information or to join\, interested individuals can contact the director\, John Del Cueto.
