Rev. Marlene joins the Middle Church team after a long career in youth and community development programming. Marlene worked with the Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) on its place-based strategy and in various increased levels of leadership for 25 years. As a former member of the HCZ senior management team, Marlene had the opportunity to develop, implement and manage key initiatives including Beacon school-based programs, the HCZ project, Promise Academy Charter Schools and finally the Healthy Harlem program.
Her work around obesity and improved health outcomes for children, currently serves as a model for communities across the country. She is an executive producer on HCZ’s documentary, Harlem Rising which captures the history of the organization. In the early years of her career, Marlene worked as deputy press secretary on Andrew Young’s gubernatorial campaign in Georgia and with Bridge Street AWME Church to create their CDC.
Marlene has a big laugh and loves the people of God! She received a BA from Howard University, and an MDiv from Princeton Theological Seminary. Marlene lives with her husband Derrick in NJ and has three grown children, Imani, Kyra and Micaiah.
