KING DAY TEACH-IN | (Re)Building Black and Jewish Beloved Community | Jan 15th
January 15 @ 9:30 am - 3:00 pm
January 15, 2023 | East End Temple & Online
Registration to join us for food has ended, but everyone is welcome to join the teach-ins after each worship!
Last year saw a stark rise in both racist legislation and cultural antisemitism. As we begin a new one, we must commit to community that doesn’t treat these as distinct evils, but instead facets of the same white supremacism that is making all of us less safe. That work demands collaboration between Black and Jewish neighbors.
This year, Middle Church is thrilled to partner with the East End Temple congregation for our annual King Day Teach-In. Rabbi Joshua Stanton will join Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis after worship, and our two communities will learn together. But learning doesn’t just happen in talks, it happens over meals, too. So in addition to the training, we’ll have delicious soul food for breakfast/lunch, and a beautiful opportunity for church and temple to eat together. While this training is hosted by our two congregations, it’s open to all!
Schedule (All Times ET):
9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.: Morning Worship
10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.: Morning Teach-In
11:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.: Morning Meal
11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.: Afternoon Worship
12:45 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.: Afternoon Meal
1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.: Afternoon Teach-In
For those of us who will join us online, the 11:45 a.m. worship and 1:30 p.m. teach-in will be streamed and is absolutely free! Our gift to you. For those who wish to join in-person and participate in the communal meal, we ask that you pay $5, to help cover some of the food costs. Because eating together also poses a higher COVID risk, we are requiring people to show proof of a negative COVID test. (We’ll gladly give you one to replace the one you used.) And we will require everyone attending to wear a mask.
We only have space for 150 people in-person at each the morning and afternoon sessions, so please register now because, between two communities, this space will fill up quickly.
