In addition to levitating the roof during Sunday worship celebrations, the choir sings at rallies and protests for LGBTQ, racial, gender, and economic equality, and by special invitation. The organizers of the annual NYC Pride March awarded the choir 2016 Best Float Performance. Our gospel choir has sung in the Pride March for more than 20 years and has been featured on the TODAY show, at Carnegie Hall, and at New York’s Public Theater. Rooted in gospel music, their repertoire includes a wide range of musical genres. Founded in 1986 by the late Jerriese Johnson, an East Village actor and singer, the choir is directed by John Del Cueto.
The choir is deeply active in the life of Middle Church and in the broader community, but its heartbeat is the people who come and sing. From the very beginning, Jerriese’s invitation has been simple and profound: “Just Come Sing.” We proudly embrace and live into this spirit of welcome. No auditions are required—everyone who loves to sing and desires to be part of a vibrant, loving community is welcome.
If you’re curious, excited, or searching for a welcoming community through song, we’d love for you to join us! We gather every Thursday from 7:00 PM to 8:45 PM at 239 Thompson St. (Judson Memorial Assembly Hall). You can join us in person or via Zoom if you prefer to connect online. To learn more or get involved, reach out to John Del Cueto—we’d be thrilled to welcome you!
Love God. Love Neighbor. Love Self. Love. Period.

Through Love, we are each created in God’s image and filled with the Divine Spark. No matter whom we love, no matter how we look, no matter where we are on our journey, God’s imprint is in every person of every race/ethnicity, every gender, and every sexual orientation. We believe God speaks many languages and is calling us on many paths to peace—Shalom. We believe that Love put on flesh—brown, poor, Jewish baby flesh—and came to live among us. We believe God lives among us still; we are the living body of Christ. We are the hands, feet, and heartbeat of God. We believe the Spirit of God calls us to freedom, and we are not free until all of us are free.
