Today is Transfiguration Sunday. This year, the concept of transfiguration–this idea of change–is bringing me back to seeing Wicked in theaters this winter.

“Something has changed within me. Something is not the same.

I’m through with playing by the rules of someone else’s game.”

We are watching our country’s rules of engagement shift like sinking sand every single day. Dr. King feared that he was integrating his people into a burning house, and I think it’s safe to say this house called America is definitely on fire.

But–

WE are organizing ourselves around putting the fire(s) out. We are resisting. For instance, there was a nationwide boycott this past Friday. It was the biggest one I’ve ever seen!

Something has indeed changed. Do you feel it? This time around is not the same. We will not comply, we will not conform. We are done playing by rules that keep us oppressed.

We. Resist.

We will be magical.

We will transform.

We will defy.

This Wednesday begins the season of Lent. You may receive ashes from Middle clergy from 8-10 am at Stonewall or from 12-1 pm at Middle, right on the corner of 2nd Ave. and 7th St. Out-of-towners, you may join Middle Clergy to observe Ash Wednesday at Pray to Rise at 8 am on Zoom.

When we reach the end of our Lenten journey, we will find ourselves at Easter and back in our building! The wait will finally be over!! Often people give something up during Lent. This year, we hope you’ll pick up a Lenten practice with us. We hope you’ll read our 40-day devotional, Wisdom for the Wilderness, with us. We hope you’ll join your community on Circle to discuss it as we prepare for Holy Week and think on what it means to return home. Consider what we’ve learned from our congregational wilderness–

I’m looking forward to walking these 40 days with you. Today is also Communion Sunday, so if you are joining online, make sure to have something to eat and something to drink.

We believe in the power of Love. Period.

Through Love, we are each created in God’s image and filled with the Divine Spark. No matter whom we love, no matter how we look, no matter where we are on our journey, God’s imprint is in every person of every race/ethnicity, every gender, and every sexual orientation. We believe God speaks many languages and is calling us on many paths to peace—Shalom. We believe that Love put on flesh—brown, poor, Jewish baby flesh—and came to live among us. We believe God lives among us still; we are the living body of Christ. We are the hands, feet, and heartbeat of God. We believe the Spirit of God calls us to freedom, and we are not free until all of us are free.
